Standard quartz tubes get incredibly hot. In a wash environment, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) love to drift toward that heat. If a tube cracks or a terminal arcs, it doesn’t just stop working. It triggers a fire or an explosion. We don’t take those chances. Instead of leaving the element exposed, we seal it inside a secondary enclosure that can handle the chemistry of your lab.
How we actually seal it
We use high-grade quartz or specialized glass sleeves, but the secret is in the details. We use flame-retardant gaskets and industrial potting compounds at the wire exits. It’s a physical wall between the heat and the air. We aren’t just wrapping the lamp in some plastic; we’re completely isolating the electrical junctions from the solvents you’re using.
The trade-off (and how to fix it)
Now, let’s be honest: adding a protective layer creates a bit of thermal lag. The enclosure blocks some of that shortwave IR radiation. To make up for it, we bump up the wattage of the internal element. This ensures your bio-sensor substrate still hits the exact temperature it needs. You’ll just need to tweak your PID controllers a bit to get used to the slightly different response time.
