When you’re building bio-sensors, heat is a tricky beast. You need enough of it to cure your adhesives and photoresists, but if you go overboard, you’ll fry your substrates. It’s a delicate balance. That’s why we lean on infrared (IR) lamps. Instead of heating up a giant oven and hoping for the best, IR sends energy straight into the material. It’s direct. It’s efficient. And it saves you from wasting energy on the air around the part. Keeping it Clean Old-school convection ovens can be messy. They often lean on heating elements that off-gas or need chemical catalysts just to keep the temperature steady. IR is different. It’s just electromagnetic waves shaking up the molecules in your curing agent. No combustion by-products, no nasty VOCs floating around. If your fab has a strict “lead-free and eco-friendly” rule, this is the way to go. Speed and Space We use short-wave or medium-wave radiation because it hits hard and fast. We’re talking seconds, not minutes. That changes everything for your floor plan. Since the process is so quick, you can use a smaller machine. Plus, your electricity bill looks a lot better when you’re using fewer kilowatt-hours per wafer. The secret sauce is pulsing the power. We don’t just leave the heater idling. The lamp only kicks in the moment the substrate hits the focal zone. No overheating. No wasted power. The “Gotchas” Now, it’s not all magic. High-intensity lamps get hot—really hot—at the head. If you crank up the wattage to speed up your line, you’ve got to make sure your cooling fans and heat sinks can actually handle the load. If your ventilation is lazy, you’ll end up warping your mounting brackets or burning out the sockets. It’s a headache you don’t want. One last tip: replacing the tubes is easy, butdon’t touch the quartz glass with your bare hands. The oils from your skin create tiny hotspots. You won’t see them at first, but they’ll kill the tube way faster than they should. Just throw on some lint-free gloves, wire it up, and slide it into the housing. Simple.
