
Keeping Your Class 100 Cleanroom Actually Clean
If you’re running a Class 100 cleanroom, you already know the nightmare of particulate shedding or chemical off-gassing. One tiny mistake and your whole batch is ruined. Most people don’t realize that standard infrared lamps are often the culprit. They can actually create ozone by ionizing the oxygen in the air. That’s a disaster for sensitive substrates because it creates a corrosive environment right where you don’t want it. We fixed this. By using high-purity synthetic quartz and rethinking the filament geometry, we’ve basically killed off the ozone production.
How we stop the ozone
Here’s the thing: ozone happens when short-wave UV radiation hits oxygen. To stop that, we use a very specific quartz blend that filters out the vacuum-UV spectrum. It means your heating process isn’t dumping reactive oxygen species into your chamber. Plus, we use high-purity quartz so you don’t get those annoying impurities “off-gassing” when the lamp hits its peak temperature. Low-grade glass just can’t handle the heat without leaking junk into the air.
The build quality
We went with fused silica for the tube. It handles thermal shock way better than the standard borosilicate stuff. We also obsess over the filament centering. If it’s off by even a hair, you get hotspots, and hotspots lead to burnouts. And since these lamps run hot to get the heat density you need, the seal where the wires meet the quartz has to be perfect. If there’s a leak, you’ve got contaminants in your cleanroom. Simple as that.
A few things to watch out for
These lamps give you clean, direct radiant heat, but there’s a trade-off. That high-purity quartz is a bit more brittle than the industrial-grade tubing you might be used to.**Be careful with your mounting brackets.**You don’t want any mechanical stress on the tube, or it might snap. And one more thing: check your airflow. If you’re packing a lot of wattage into a tiny space, the heat load is massive. Even without the ozone, that kind of heat can warp nearby plastic if your cooling isn’t up to the task.
