
Getting the Most Out of Your Trolley Heaters
If you’ve ever worked in a semiconductor clean room, you know the struggle. You need to heat wafers on transport trolleys, but getting that energy exactly where it needs to go is harder than it looks. Most of the time, the heat just… wanders. It leaves the lamp and ends up heating the housing or the air around it instead of the wafer. That’s a waste of energy and a headache for your setup. The secret is the gold. We use gold-coated reflectors because, frankly, gold is incredible with infrared radiation. It bounces back over 98% of that heat. Instead of the energy spraying everywhere, it gets pushed into a tight, focused beam. The best part? You get more heat on the wafer without having to crank up the wattage. This makes a huge difference in how the whole trolley feels. When you aren’t fighting against wasted energy, you can run at lower power and still hit your target temperatures. It keeps the rest of the chassis cool. If you just throw raw power at the problem without a good reflector, you risk cooking the surrounding components in your clean room. Plus, we’ve spent a lot of time tweaking the geometry. We want a smooth, even heat—not those annoying hot spots that cause wafers to expand unevenly. Setting these up is pretty straightforward. They’re designed to just slide right into your existing trolley systems. We make sure the focal point is dialed in so the heat hits the wafer exactly where it sits. One quick warning, though. Gold is picky. If oils or chemicals get on that reflective surface, your heat distribution will start to drift. It’s a subtle shift at first, but then you’ll notice the temperature isn’t uniform across the wafer. The temptation there is to just turn up the power to compensate. Don’t do that.
