
Getting Your Bathroom Heat Just Right
If you’re putting an infrared heater in your bathroom, you can’t just guess the power. You need to get the wattage and the room size in sync. Think of it this way: you aren’t trying to heat the air—that’s what a space heater does. You’re heating you and the surfaces around you. If you go too low on the wattage, the cold tiles and drafts will just eat up all the heat. But if you go overboard? You’ll turn your bathroom into a sauna or, worse, trip your breakers.
Picking the Right Power
It mostly comes down to how much space you’re working with. For a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a 400W to 600W shortwave lamp usually does the trick. It keeps things cozy without being overkill. If you have a medium-sized bathroom (4m² to 8m²), you’ll want something in the 800W to 1200W range. For those big master baths or open wet rooms over 10m², you’ve got options. You can either go with a few 1200W units spread out or one heavy-duty industrial array to cover the area.
Safety and the “Hot Spot” Problem
Bathrooms are humid. Really humid. That’s why you need an IP-rated housing. It keeps the moisture away from the electrical guts so things don’t short out. I always suggest shortwave infrared for these rooms. It cuts through the steam and moisture in the air way better than longwave does. One thing to watch out for:mounting height. If you hang a 1200W lamp too low, you’re going to create a “hot spot.” Nobody wants to feel like they’re being grilled while brushing their teeth. Keep your ceiling at least 2.2 meters high for those high-wattage units so the heat has room to spread out naturally.
Power vs. Your Electric Bill
The big draw here is that “instant-on” feeling. You flip a switch, and you’re warm. It’s great. But running a massive 1500W lamp in a tiny room is just throwing money away. Plus, it wears out the quartz tube faster than it needs to. Here’s a pro tip: hook your heater up to a timer or a motion sensor. That way, it only fires up when you’re actually in the room. Your power bill will thank you, and your heater will last a lot longer.
