
Keeping Your Infrared Heaters Safe in Wet Zones
Let’s be honest: putting infrared lamps in a bathroom or under a damp pergola is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. Water and electricity don’t get along. At all. If moisture finds a way in, you’re looking at short circuits or ground faults. Not exactly the vibe you want when you’re trying to relax in a warm shower or a cozy outdoor lounge. To keep things safe, we focus on two things: how we seal the box and how we handle the power connections.
Dealing with the Damp
You’ll see a lot of products labeled “waterproof,” but that doesn’t actually tell you much. We look for IPX4 or IPX5 ratings instead. Why? Because that’s what actually handles the splashing water and thick steam you find in a bathroom. We use silicone gaskets and sealed cable glands to keep the inside bone-dry. It’s a critical step. If steam leaks in, it turns into tiny water droplets right on the quartz tube. That’s a recipe for a premature burnout at the seals, and nobody wants to be replacing tubes every few months.
The Nitty-Gritty of the Wiring
The real danger zone is where the power actually hits the lamp. To stop electricity from jumping where it shouldn’t, we use reinforced ceramic insulators in the lamp holders. But the gear is only half the battle. For any bathroom setup, you absolutely need a GFCI or RCD in the circuit. It’s your safety net. We also run a 500V DC test on the insulation resistance just to make sure there’s zero leakage hitting the outer chassis.
The Trade-offs
Here’s the thing: you can’t have everything. If you want total water protection, the fixture has to be bigger. We have to move the electronics further away from the heat, which adds some bulk. You also lose a bit of that direct, searing heat because of the safety grids and glass shields. It’s a balance. You’re weighing absolute safety against how much heat you actually feel. One last tip: use heat-resistant cabling. If you use cheap wire, the insulation will melt long before the lamp ever gives out. And that’s a problem you don’t want.
